Some information about this great Muslim festival, Eid al-Adha (Greater Eid).

On Friday, September 1, 2017, we are celebrating Eid al-Adha in Muslim communities throughout Canada and around. It will last for few days.

Eid al-Adha celebrated worldwide each year as a holier of the two great Muslim Eid festivals, (Eid ul Fitr and Eid al-Adha). In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha takes place on the 10th day of the 12th month. Moon sightings may cause a variation of the date for Islamic festivals, depending on the region and country.

EID AL-ADHA is the great festival and marks the sacrifice made to God. It is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice or Festival of Sacrifice as it commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham). It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismaeel (Isaac), as an act of obedience to God’s command. Before he sacrificed his son, God intervened by sending his angel Jibra’il (Gabriel), who then put a ram in his son’s place. In commemoration of this, the celebrations symbolize Ibrahim’s devotion to Allah and this mark the end of the Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia which thousand and thousand of Muslims all over the world embark on. Worshipers usually slaughter a sheep, a goat or a lamb as part of the festivities – but anyone wishing to sacrifice an animal and divide into three parts: the family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy persons.

Muslims begin their celebration with morning special prayers, followed by food and exchanging of gifts with family and friends. They also share their food and money with the poor so that they can celebrate too. It is time to sacrifice and generosity to friends, family and the needy people.  Eid al-Adha is also a time for forgiveness and compassion.

Muslim Associations are also working for Eid festivals, including fun rides, shows, sport tournaments and various international cuisines.

My best wishes to those celebrating Eid al-Adha. May God give Peace and Prosperity to all over the World, and safe it from natural disaster, Ameen.
